We recently flew from Bangkok to Zurich on Swiss Airlines and overall found it to be a comfortable flight (considering it was more than 11 hours!). Traveling with a young child, we are always on the outlook for great, family-friendly airlines, especially on long haul flights. Read on to see how Swiss measured up to our expectations.
Check-In
We were quite early (a bit more than 2 hours before our flight) but the check-in process was very efficient and we didn’t have to wait long at all to speak to an agent. Swiss also offers advance check-in and even checks you in automatically if you have supplied all of the required passenger information when purchasing your tickets. If you go one of these routes you can simply show up, drop off your bags and be on your way.
Boarding
Families with small children were given priority boarding on our flight. The gate staff actually came and personally told our family we could board with first/business which was a nice touch.
In Flight Entertainment
The plane we flew on (Boaing 777-300 ER) was equipped with individual touch-screen televisions on the back of each seat. They had a fairly decent selection of new releases and older films including a number of things for kids. Claire got bored of it quickly though, so I was happy we had some of her favorite shows and educational games loaded on our Ipad. Do note however that they do not provide any children’s headphones and the provided headphones are earbuds so I’d recommend bringing along your own set if you plan to have your kids watch the in-flight movies.
Food
The food was good by airplane standards. We pre-booked a child’s meal in advance and each time her meal was brought just before the rest of the meals were served. Both of the kids meals had were a pasta main course with some side items such as fruit salad. Miss C’s favorite part was that each meal came with a chocolate bar which is where we place the blame for the fact that she barely slept.
Special extras for kids
When we boarded the plane the flight attendant warmly welcomed our three-year old mini adventurer and gave her a pack of gummy snacks and an activity book. The book had some coloring and sticker activities as well as other activities better suited for older children. The one we had was themed around the World Cup which was just a few days out from our travel dates. She was only interested in the book for a little while and most of the activities are designed for kids that can read, but it did keep her occupied for a few minutes, which means it is basically gold for a long flight with a toddler!
All in all, flying Swiss with kids was a comfortable experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to book another trip with them.
