0I’m all about food trends and when I saw that one of America’s hottest food trends had come to Bangkok I was more than just a little curious.
What is Poke?
Poke is a new idea to me altogether, but when someone described it to me as “sushi in a bowl” they needn’t say anymore, I was sold.
Hunter Poke’s bowls feature several selections of raw fish, or tofu and a variety of other toppings served over Japanese rice. As the description from their Facebook page puts it:
“The first full-service poke restaurant in Thailand. We specialize in poke, a traditional Hawaiian dish featuring cubed raw fish over a bowl of rice that has been the local’s favorite for centuries.”

The restaurant is casual and features counter service. You can choose from a pre-fab bowl or do the build your own option. For our first visit, I took a somewhat safe route and had “The Classic” which came with salmon, mango, avocado, pomelo, fried shallots, spicy mayo and their special house shoyu. It is served on white rice with a variety of available upgrades including subbing the white rice for a tasty seaweed rice.
The menu also features some flavors designed for Thai palates with ingredients such as Thai fish sauce, guava and more. For a more Thai-influenced bowl, try the Bangkok Dangerous.
They claim they never serve leftovers and all items are prepped fresh each day. I have to say, the bowl tasted quite fresh, and the fish especially so.
Don’t get too full on the Poke though, you will want to make sure to leave room for their Acai smoothie bowls. The smoothie is made with coconut water and is then topped with granola, goji berries and coconut, all served in a bowl. I scarfed it down so fast I completely forgot to take a picture.
But is it kid-friendly?
While there were no high-chairs in sight, the space is fairly kid-friendly. Miss C enjoyed climbing on the crate-like seating and she adored the shark in their logo which is displayed prominently on the wall. The staff were very friendly with her and tolerated her wandering around the restaurant a bit. Since they offer a build-your-own option, it’s fairly simple to order a bowl of things your kid will eat. However, I ordered C an Acai Bowl and she actually favored my Classic Poke bowl, spicy mayo and all! All in all, I definitely preferred visiting with my friend a few days prior to taking the toddler. However if you are in the mood for poke and have children in tow, it’s certainly do-able with kids!

Bangkok is proving yet again that it is heaven-on-earth for foodies. Whether you are in Bangkok for just a few days or an long-time resident looking for a different food experience, Hunter Poke is a welcome deviation from standard street food fare.
