Splashing into Toddler-Friendly Fun at Water Country USA!

While not the first thing that came to mind when we first thought of visiting the history-rich Williamsburg, Virginia area, Water Country USA proved to be a great way to spend a day with Joel’s brother and family. Our summers are generally focused on family friendly activities with Miss C and her cousins and this one was tons of fun! Visiting a water park with a toddler may seem like a daunting day out.  However, with a few tips, a visit to Water Country USA can prove to be a fun day out for your family members of every age.

1. 

   Diaper changing areas – Water Country USA has certainly done what they can to make the park friendly for kids of all ages. There are diaper changing areas located throughout the park at convenient locations in order to make diaper changing a cinch. I was pleased to know that I wouldn’t have to trek all over the park in order to find a place to change a diaper. Instead, I was able to change her diaper and be quickly on my way!

2. Well-stocked gift shop – Speaking of diapers, swim diapers are required for kids who aren’t potty trained. Our favorite swim diapers are made by iplay. But in the event that you overlook packing them, thankfully the gift shop does carry swim diapers. They also carry sunscreen and virtually every essential item for enjoying a day out slipping and sliding at the water park.
   
3.  Lots of toddler friendly rides and activities.   Check out the Water Country USA map on their website to get a good idea of what rides your kids will be allowed on and to better plan out your visit. The park map is labelled to make it clear which rides your kids can ride based on their height. Some of the attractions require children below a certain height to ride provided that the don a lifejacket. Those are also clearly labelled on the map.  There are three separate children’s play areas named the Kritter Korral, Cow-A-Bunga, and H20 UFO.

   

   I think our favorite was Kritter Korral because they had all sorts of animal themed slides and some large animals that Miss C could climb on. We also enjoyed the lazy river and the wave pool as a family. Neither attractions offer tubes, but we found that we got the best experience in the lazy river from wearing life jackets as we could all float along and soak in the sunshine and fresh air of beautiful Williamsburg!

   

   The favorite ride of Joel and I was Big Daddy Falls. Miss C (18 months) was allowed ride with us andwearing a life jacket. However, she didn’t totally enjoy it and was a bit upset by the end. It was awesome for her to experience her first “big kid” ride at the water park though!

   

4. Life Jackets Provided! – All this talk about life jackets may have you wondering if you are going to be lugging around life jackets for your entire family all day. Rest assured, Water Country has you covered. There are kids and adult life jackets of every size as well as Coast Guard approved Infant life jackets available throughout the park. Absolutely no need to bring your own. You are free to pick up and leave the life jackets at many stations throughout the park. You can choose to continue wearing it or return it to the same station where you got it. At a couple of the attractions we had to ask the lifeguard for the infant jackets, but they were more than happy to help and provided the life jacket quickly. So, if you don’t see them readily available, be sure to ask!

   

    

5. Visit Early and Often! – Our absolute best tip to enjoy your visit to Water Country is to visit early in the day. They open at 10 AM and it is certainly best to visit early, when the lines are short and baby isn’t too tired! Getting there right when the gates opens (or even a few minutes before) will help you enjoy some of the more popular attractions before the crowds file in. You can expect significantly shorter lines early in the morning and will be able to make the most of the day before the toddler gets grumpy!

Water Country USA proved to be the perfect family friendly day out in Williamsburg. Both of the kids in our group (ages 18 months and 8 years) found plenty to engage them and wear them out. We certainly had a quiet drive back to North Carolina after all of that fun in the sun!
